Idea

A search tool that indexes GitHub repos and ranks them by meaningful metrics (quality, activity, community) instead of relevance. Helps developers find the best projects faster. Target: developers looking for libraries and tools.

Why this is interesting

GitHub's native search is notoriously bad at surfacing quality over popularity, and with the explosion of AI-generated repos and forks cluttering results, the signal-to-noise problem is getting measurably worse in 2024-2025. No clear incumbent owns this space — Libraries.io tried something adjacent but focuses on package ecosystems rather than repo discovery, and it's largely stagnant. The $500-3k/mo revenue band is realistic only with a tight monetization hook like API access or a browser extension with a pro tier, since most developers expect search tools to be free and conversion will be brutal. The biggest risk is that GitHub itself ships improved search ranking, which it has done incrementally before, or that a well-resourced tool like Sourcegraph expands into this discovery use case and immediately outcompetes on index size and trust.
