Remote work normalization has pushed developer communities to actively seek local in-person connection, making city-level tech networking a real unmet need right now. Meetup.com is the obvious substitute, but its general-audience positioning and declining product quality have left a gap specifically for tech-native communities. The $1k–5k/mo revenue band is realistic only if monetization goes beyond free meetup coordination — think paid organizer tools, sponsor placements, or city-specific job boards — because the HN audience is notoriously resistant to paying for community features. The biggest risk is that HN itself, or a simple Slack/WhatsApp group culture, makes a dedicated platform feel like unnecessary overhead, keeping the product permanently in "useful side project" territory rather than a real business.
