Audio-first content consumption has real momentum right now, driven by AirPods ubiquity and the documented decline in long-form reading attention — newsletter open rates are sliding while podcast listening keeps growing. The closest substitute is already well-funded: both Spotify and Apple have experimented with text-to-audio features, and tools like Artifact and even Pocket have offered TTS for years, meaning the baseline user expectation is free or bundled. The $1k–5k/mo band is plausible but tight — it requires either a sizable prosumer subscriber base willing to pay for voice quality above free TTS, or a B2B angle selling to newsletter operators rather than readers, which is a meaningfully different product and GTM. The biggest risk is commodity: ElevenLabs and OpenAI TTS APIs have made high-quality voice generation near-free to replicate, so any defensibility depends entirely on distribution or workflow integration rather than audio quality itself, and that moat is hard to build at indie scale.
