Podcast editing tools and browser-based DAWs are proliferating fast, and the gap between what WebAudio APIs promise and what actually performs under real-world conditions — multi-hour recordings, mobile browsers, large file sizes — is a genuine pain point developers hit and then work around badly. Wavesurfer.js is the obvious incumbent, and it handles short clips fine, but degrades noticeably on long recordings; that's the wedge. The revenue band being unknown is the real warning sign here: this is a library, not a product, which means the path to monetization runs through a commercial license tier, a hosted waveform-generation API, or an editor UI built on top — none of which are guaranteed just because the underlying tech is solid. The most likely failure mode is that the addressable market of developers building long-form audio tooling is narrow enough that it stays a well-regarded open-source project with a GitHub star count and no business.
