Hacker News's "Who wants to be hired?" and "Meet HN" threads have always had organic engagement, and with remote work plateauing and professionals actively seeking local tech communities again, location-based professional networking has a real tailwind right now. LinkedIn is the obvious incumbent but is widely disliked for exactly the use case this targets — casual, local, low-friction connection — making it more of a foil than a real competitor. The $1k–5k/mo revenue band is honest given the 1,700-user base; monetization through premium features or event ticketing is plausible but requires meaningful conversion from what is currently a free, low-engagement directory. The biggest risk is that "meet people in your city" tools consistently suffer from the cold-start problem city by city, and 700 cities with ~2.4 users each on average means most local graphs are too thin to be useful, which kills retention before monetization becomes relevant.
