AI coding agent usage has exploded with Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Code all burning through API credits in ways that surprise developers mid-sprint, making cost visibility a real and immediate pain point rather than a theoretical one. No clear incumbent owns this specific slice — Cursor has some internal usage displays but nothing enforceable or portable across agents. The $2k–10k/mo band is plausible only as a team-tier play, since individual developers will resist paying for a cost-control layer on top of costs they're already resenting, so the pricing logic depends heavily on selling to engineering leads rather than solo devs. The biggest risk is that the major agent platforms (Anthropic, OpenAI, the IDEs themselves) ship native budget controls within 6–12 months and make a standalone tool redundant before it reaches meaningful distribution.
